Nationality

There are two main ways of becoming a British citizen.

1. Registration

People who are British Dependent Territories citizens, British Overseas citizens or are British protected persons or British Nationals (Overseas), may apply to register as British citizens, after having lived in the UK for five years.

2. Naturalisation

A child born in the UK will only be a British citizen if the parents are settled here (permanent residents or citizens) or if the child has lived in the UK for the first 10 years of his/her life. This is to prevent abuse from those who give birth to a child in the UK with the only purpose of staying in the country.
