Nationality

There are two main ways of becoming a British citizen.

1. Registration

People who are British Dependent Territories citizens, British Overseas citizens or are British protected persons or British Nationals (Overseas), may apply to register as British citizens, after having lived in the UK for five years.

2. Naturalisation

After having had indefinite leave to remain for a year, foreign nationals may apply for naturalisation.

A child born in the UK will only be a British citizen if the parents are settled here (permanent residents or citizens).  This is to prevent abuse from people who have a child with the only intention of staying in the country.
